I support the dropping of analogies because I trust Atkinson’s judgement. But this perspective is interesting.
We are living in the age of the false, and often shameless, analogy. A slick advertising campaign compares the politicians working to dismantle Social Security to Franklin D. Roosevelt. In a new documentary, “Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room,” Kenneth Lay compares attacks on his company to the terrorist attacks on the United States.

Even though drug companies disclose funny and sometimes frightening side effects in their ads, they don’t have to tell us everything. Merck may have had research, as early as 2000, identifying Vioxx’s heart attack risk, but didn’t make it known to the public. This might be the case for the drugs you and your family are taking.
